Norman MacDonald - Food Train Service User

We haven’t been using the service very long, maybe just before Christmas. I discovered through the hospital that Food Train was available and my brother is housebound and has been with Food Train for a couple years.

My wife is now immobile, walks with a zimmer so I was doing all the messages, but I was finding it a bit difficult. I phoned Food Train and we were outside Glasgow so they put us I touch with Food Connect, and we got Andrew who has been first class – it’s been a godsend to us.

On a weekly basis, we phone him on a Thursday night, and he will deliver to us on a Saturday.  Suits him and suits us, it’s ideal. Fortunately, I’ve got some good neighbours if I need any extras, although he’s said to us if we need anything else just to call. He’s a nice chap - very, very nice – and we’re getting to know each other now. I’m delighted with him, we’re getting on well.

We’re two flights up and I was getting to the stage when I had to leave some groceries at the bottom of the stairs and go up and down.  And looking after my wife it was getting too much and that’s when Food Train stepped in.

My wife manages to do the washing etc. but certain things I’ve got to do for her and things she just can’t manage.  Last year she fell in the car park and broke both wrists and she’d now got arthritis.  She can’t open things.  I don’t do everything for her but I do quite a lot. They said they could get carers in but I’m not ready for that.  We’re managing fine and I’m still fairly fit.  But having to trudge round to the shops and carry the shopping back home was getting to be quite a job.  What a difference it’s made for me.  I’ve got more time now to do things for my wife, like cooking.  I do all the cooking as she’s worried in case things fall when she’s in the kitchen.

I give Food Train 100% for the service they give.  I’m delighted with the service - overall gold stars all round!

I’m fairly active - I still play golf and get out with some of my friends but with Covid that’s hit on the head and with my wife’s situation too.  But we just get on with it – we’ve got to live with it, and we do.  We’ve both had our vaccinations now!
